ParticipantSteven – Another decent source, a bit less technical and perhaps easier to use : WhatsThisCloud.com. They have a downloadable e-book on cloud types that has sketches, photos, comparisons (for instance, altocumulus vs stratocumulus), etc.

ParticipantMichael – I notice that iridescence is easier to spot with the naked eye when I have sunglasses on; that would seem to correspond to your ‘underexposing’ tips.
I’ve used a polarizing filter when shooting cirrus clouds, trying to increase the contrast between the white of the cloud and the blueness/darkness of the sky – an effort to show their ‘wispiness’. That seems to work pretty well most of the time (but I’m not shooting close to the sun either). I look at the sky through the (circular) polarizing filter, twist it see what the different positions will hopefully produce before adding it to the lens (usually between 20mm-35mm focal length).
I’m still experimenting ; your tips are very helpful. THANKS!!

ParticipantMichael – do you use a polarizer at all? If so, any difference in outcomes, either pre- or post processing?

ParticipantLots of lost stuff in the sky, Keelin –
I think Luke Skywalker lost his light saber over Dallas . . . .

ParticipantThanks, George. I hope this gave a bit of flavor to the actual eclipse.

ParticipantAs you can see, there was also a bit of haze here in Dallas (although nothing as dramatic as the mysterious one captured by George. Thanks, G, for the excellent shot). I hope this composite brings back some Red, Wolf-y memories.
Also- Thanks Laurence fore the UK links. Echoing Keelin, it’s nice to see what other parts of the world looked upon.

ParticipantHello, and Welcome from Dallas USA.
Mostly in Dallas, since the land is so flat and not near any significant body of water, I mostly look at a very boring sky. But sometimes I can get away to anywhere I wish, through magic holes in the sky . . .

ParticipantAs I say, I got the eclipse date wrong. I’ll be out with my camera tonight. Hopefully something to share after that.

ParticipantOOPS ! Got the date of the eclipse wrong. Good thing I don’t earn my living as an astronomer.
Still, haze is beginning to cover the sky here in Dallas.Don Hatfield
ParticipantRamona, hygge, and anyone else –
I have identical issues when accessing the Forum through my iPhone. I can log in, but not access, seemingly random, threads. I do not have these problems when using my PC.
My tentative conclusion (due somewhat that I can control everything on my PC, but not on my Apple phone) :
Apple phones do not seem to clear history very well, so if you’ve ever accessed a thread while not being logged on, then Apple automatically redirects you back to the not-logged-on-version of the thread.
Does this spark any experiences?

ParticipantGeorge – (sundog? photo) : don’t know; don’t care. This photo just speaks to me. I would be proud to hang a 10×20 in my home.

ParticipantGeorge – How did you know that Fluctus is my favorite clout?
All I get in Dallas is . . . . .Sir in reverie and watch the changing color of the waves
That break upon the idle seashores of the mind

ParticipantUnfortunately, it was extremely overcast here in Dallas. The eclipse might as well have not occurred, for all the visibility locally. Did anyone get a shot of it?
All I have to offer is a shot of the eclipse last January (31/01/2018) from my front yard. Just before totality. I look forward to any CAS shots of 2019’s eclipse.

ParticipantThese all around shots make me feel like I was back in Yellowknife again. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing (given the pic of the thermometer reading). I’m sure you had a great time; I know I did. Thanks for the revived memories.
PS – I found my graphic ;-) -
