Hans StockerParticipantLove the blues in #114 and the virga streaks in #115 Michael. And Neil posted at the end of the year a fine composition of contrasting clouds.
Next one shows also some kind of contrast.

Differences
Hans StockerParticipantLike the crow I would also like an encore Keelin and George. Very niche hairy halo Keelin, and great sun pillar George! This makes me think that – when watching an optical phenomenon – I am always a bit disappointed when it vanishes and find myself afterwards trying to remember what it was like. But then there are still the pictures in the case the camera was at hand. The lyrics you quoted Keelin say it just as it is.

Scattered Sundog
Hans StockerParticipantThank you very much Keelin for kind compliments. It is really nice to read you enjoy my silly thoughts. And please know your replies are also a joy to me. The Great Depth Of Wonder is an example of beauty and simplicity. Less is so much more!

Hans StockerParticipantBe sure you certainly don’t bore us with these great pictures George. Like Laurence I am not the envious type but I feel the same like he so eloquently described. Love your pictures and the stories you exchange with Don. Thanks for sharing!
Hans StockerParticipantVery nice Keelin. I really had to laugh about your reply. I wanted to ask Alice about like you suggested, but got stuck in the rabbit hole. I maybe had too much rarebit?
Hans StockerParticipantThanks Michael.
By the way: I still have to refresh the page content regularly after seemingly getting logged out, but not always.

Like A Cavity
Hans StockerParticipantGreat capture of the sundogs, George. A 44 degree parhelion is rare, so congrats. Unfortunately I don´t have an answer to your question about the height of the sundog that seems to be not at the same level as the sun itself. On the other hand I am sure you don´t see a subsun. A subsun must be just as far under the horizon as the sun is above. That is why you can only spot a subsun from a plane or from a mountain top. When the brighter spot on your picture is the sun, you might see a lower pillar beneath the sun (I think it is there), but that does not explain the extension to the left and right of the bright spot (like the parhelic) unless that spot is the sun. In that case the brighter spot above the sun is the puzzle.
I suppose you wanted to have more time to make pictures entering the plane. It is a lovely extra to your fantastic aurora experiences you already described elsewhere. I hope to see more of it!

Hans StockerParticipantHappy new year George and all who reads this. Your aurora is an awesome start of the year. The curling curtains of aurora high in the sky are amazing. Must have been enchanting!
Hans StockerParticipantGeorge that are two fantastic sundogs to begin the year with! I bet its very cold over there. Brrrreautiful!
And in Lincolnshire its a bit like here Ian.
Best wishes for 2019 to all!

First Cumulus of the year casts its shadows.
Hans StockerParticipantCuriosity was certainly rewarding this year. Continuous inspiration, like Don said. And we keep exploring. I look forward for what great surprises you all will produce in Black & White (or in color).
To end this year ….

Some Soundless Fireworks
Hans StockerParticipantYes Keelin, who knows what will be seen On Close Examination. Although pareidolia might not have to be stimulated ………

Magic Mushroom?

From the archives: a Moonhalo
Hans StockerParticipantWell Keelin. I did wonder indeed, but eventually the face appeared and I thought how is it possible I had to look for it first. Very nice. And now he seems to be a friendly version of the violent white orc from the Lord Of The Rings. Or even a cloudy version of cubistic art! I hope pareidolia is harmless….
