How wonderful everyone! Keelin your subtle, yet beautiful halo is a treat for the eyes. Especially with the contrail floating quietly by. And Hans your beautiful sun mermaid is a beautiful sight to see in the sky. And finally Michael, that is one amazing iridescent cloud. How did you happen to get such a picture? Below is an image that almost is a pair with Hans along with its little child.

    Hello Marcia,

I believe Cavum clouds form when the droplets in a layer of cloud suddenly freeze into ice crystals and begin to fall (causing the fallstreak to form). This can happen when ice crystals fall onto the cloud layer from a higher cirrus cloud and cause the water droplets to freeze. This can also happen when planes fly near or above the cloud and allow their fuel to fall onto the lower cloud and cause the water droplets to freeze. Great photos by the way!

Thank you Hans for your reply. I believe that it is! Wow, I didn’t quite know what that was. I knew it must be something special, as it goes along with the rare circle. I do also believe that you have caught part of the parhelic circle. Congratulations!

Here I have a sundog(a relatively bright one at that) shining in the evening sky. I really hope you enjoy my little dog.

Wonderful sweeping cirrus, Keelin. It looks as though an artist has just taken his/her first stroke across the canvas that is our sky. And Hans, the purple color looks marvelous. I would have liked the rain that you said did not happen, as I do enjoy listening and sitting out in the rain.

Here is a picture from May 2019 after a decent-sized storm rolled over our town. You can see the mamma formations on the underbelly of the cloud. The overall swirl of the cloud is what I find the most captivating.

    Hello everyone,

Just wanted to start off by saying that I think all of your pictures are wonderful but one in particular caught my eye. Correct me if I’m wondering, but I believe Alan has caught some Jetstream clouds. Either way it is a wonderful capture.

I was going through the archives and have decided to do you this picture from a while ago. Just some wonderful orange colors brightening up the sky.

    Hope you all enjoy,

    Gregory V.

    Hello Everyone,

Here’s the second collection of pictures from June of 2018 or 2019. It’s nothing really special in its own right, just a portion of a 22° halo. I think this one has something extra because of the wonderful contrast of the Cirrus and the lower Altocumulus. I remember getting out of my car thinking, “that is amazing!” I did brighten the first image a tiny bit, but otherwise no really big edits. Anyways I really hope you enjoy!!!

    Best wishes,

    Hello Everyone,

I am going to be posting two different occasions. The first is part of the Parhelic circle family. It was taken on the same day as the others and I think it’s one of my favorites. And let me express that I absolutely love this community, hope you all have a great day.

    Best wishes,

Congratulations! Welcome to the society! You’ll love it here, especially because you seem to love the clouds as much as all of us. Hope to see you posting soon.

    Hello,
Love the shadow Keelin, I can see the outline of a person drifting thorough the clouds.

And Michael, that cumulus looks wonderful with the rats shooting out behind it. Well captured.

Below is a mixture of Altocumulus and Cirrus.

    Hello,
George, those sunsets have colors that I wish I could see everyday. Wonderful captures.

Keelin, those sunsets are not only beautiful but as Hans said there indeed seems to be an upper tangent optical phenomena. It is easier to see the outline of the curved in the first picture.

Hans, that sunset has a beautiful color to it. I believe it is mostly red with a hint of pink. Fantastic capture.

Here is a sunset from yesterday. I had to race outside of town to capture it before the color went away. Hope you enjoy!

A very beautiful start to the day here, but then it turned out to be a blue sky day. I live in South-eastern Washington State in the U.S. We had some Altocumulus Stratiformis here along with the Lenticularis type as well. Hope you all have a Happy 2020!

Thank you for the kind words Keelin!! You would be correct, I was incredibly excited that day at seeing something so rare. To be honest, I didn’t know the name of the phenomenon at the time but when I got home and saw how rare it was, I was overjoyed.

Below I have a picture of tonight’s sunset. I’d say it looks like the sky was divided on what color it should be. Hope you all have a cloudy new year!!!!

I just want to keep this at the top as Hans did so kindly. Tomorrow is New Years Day so I hope we get many posts on this thread.

    Best wishes,
