Cloud enthusiast, Melissa Moon recently sent us this time lapse video. It was taken at twilight in Great Torrington, North Devon, UK and begins with a color study of clouds and an arching rainbow and ends with the moonrise of the August supermoon. Bill Ward has sent us this video showing lightning recorded during a “Spanish Plume” thunderstorm.
This mass of warm moist air moved over the UK on the 19/5/14 and produced some dramatic flashes.
This selection is from the most active part of the storm in the early evening.

Martin Garnett recently sent us this video. Gavin Pretor-Pinney has advised that the lenticularis formation is embedded within a stratocumulus layer and so is more or less visible at different stages of the video. He also mentioned that it is possible that there are some moments of “asperatus” formations visible.

‘Lady Eve’, on the Society Facebook page, alerted us to this great celebration of cheesy cloud art from the legendary 80s presenter of The Joy of Painting, on PBS in The States. It has been remixed by the very talented John D. Boswell. “Relax, let it flow. Think like water…”
Clouds that look like a series of breaking waves are known as ‘Kelvin-Helmholtz’ formations. They can appear at the low, middle and high cloud levels. This video, filmed from Birmingham, Alabama, US, shows a particularly low example of Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. So dramatic were the waves that they were featured in the local news, described by reporters as the ‘tsunami clouds’. We like dialogue between the cloudspotting couple. She want’s him to call the TV weather man to ask what they are. He seems to be too busy using his power tools to put up some shelves at the same time as he’s filming them…
