OK, Hans. But for the pedantic ones like me, could I suggest you make the title more open ended?

e.g. HALOS AND RAINBOWS VOLUME II might become

    Haloes, Rainbows etc. Volume II

Hamblyn uses the term ‘optical phenomena’ a lot but I failed to find out what he means by ‘and Effects’. So I would be happy to settle for ‘etc.’.

Ah… ‘The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft a-gley’, as Burns noted. The Themed Thread can only work if the theme comes along often enough to remain in the contributor’s mind.

So I offer this link to an Andrew Kirk photo of alpenglow

Andrew was a frequent contributor (he often linked with Alec Jones) who kept us enthralled with the clouds in the Owens Valley, CA, beneath the Sierra Mountains; frequently at dawn.

Catherine, I would add my welcome back to that of Hans who is one of those making this thread everything I had hoped for.

Four days on and the moon in Hampshire, UK, is full tomorrow – it changes fast – so we might see a silver moon lining. And it is accompanied right now in the south by Jupiter, I think, with Venus low in the northwest.

This is mine from about 5/2007. What is at the bottom right (I don’t know).

This is targeted at the sunset, following the oil platform picture:

In The Times (UK) 4MAY2018, Horbury had a sun rise over Staithes in North Yorkshire; eerie colouring with bluish houses, red rooftops around the sea estuary.

Superb. The fleeting pileus and vellum to boot.

Love the exclamation mark, Michael. Almost wavy navy, I suppose.

Nice clouds, Ariana. I guess many have a similar shot – mine is pre-digital so essentially lost.

It is worrying that the USGS are predicting the Hayward Fault could produce an earthquake soon. I note the USGS office in CA is nearer San Diego!

Welcome, Lynda. This is what Hans was referring to below I guess. Your lines are incredibly straight and limited in size in one dimension, but perhaps might be attributed to the hills in your pictures. Otherwise straight lines in clouds are often attributed to contrails, but that seems unlikely.

This program (probably the second in the link) was about the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) and well advanced plans for a QCC forest in perpetuity in each Commonwealth country (Epping Forest in the UK). HM mused ‘It might change the climate again’.

Thank you, Hans. Poetic and enigmatic. I am not quite sure about Dr Corvidova but guess it is linked to the picture of a corvid used with his sign on. Alec came back like a whirlwind and left almost with a cri de coeur. We can but wish him well and hope for re-entry.

    Alec Jones

Can anyone point me at Alec’s departure note, please? I missed it and today was wondering why he had gone quiet – I see some references to his departure.
