Hans StockerParticipantThat is a great cirrus composition you captured Keelin with Feathering Soft clouds.

Floating
Hans StockerParticipantCongrats George! I noticed your red cumulus is cloud of the month December. Well deserved!
Hans StockerParticipantThank you George. I recognized your POtD today on the gallery. Love it. It could have fit well in this topic with its very nice reds (sunset or sunrise?).
Hans StockerParticipantAnd exuberant the cirrus is, Keelin. Wild!

Decaying Soft Clouds
Hans StockerParticipantThanks Laurence for the extra link. I inmediately checked the first link and the pictures turn out to be same on yours and Hygg’s link, but what surprised me was that I was sure I read tomorrow a very different text with the remark that only a handful of higher order rainbows were spotted worldwide and there was no explanation about reflection bows. The author did not know yet about a good explanation. Someone must have pointed it out and it is probably corrected, I suppose.
Anyway a marvellous picture. Thank you both for sharing.
Hans StockerParticipantAnti-crepuscular rays. Before I knew about there existence I captured this scenery in Italy (Gargano) at the end of the day in the spring of 2012. The sun was not that low already. I noticed the converging beams of light falling through the clouds. I never understood it until I got familiar with the optical phenomena a few years later and found the explanation on atoptics. Nevertheless most examples are captured at the moment of sunset in far less clouded skies so it still took some time to conclude these must be anti-crepuscular. It is my first and only example of this wonderful phenomenon.

Hans StockerParticipantYou are right Keelin. On a larger scale the subtle undulating lines are well visible. Great spotting. Subtle beauty!

More Reds
Hans StockerParticipantHere is the link
Note that the drawing sows that the water-surface may also be behind the observer.
Hans StockerParticipantHygge, I have had that problem too. Initially only thread behaved like you describe, then all of them. It lasted for a week before I was able to post a reply again and I thought it must be solved, but evidently not yet for all users. I suggest to send a mail about it.
Nice rainbow anyway but not unexplainable in my opinion. I bet there is a large area of water – not visible on the picture – in front of the rainbow. What results is a reflection bow. So you see two bows – the primary an the secondary bow – and in between the primary of the refection bow originating (seemingly) from the same spot as the primary bow. A rare sighting for sure but not that rare as the article states. Look for further explanation on atoptics and don’t confuse it with third, fourth or fifth order rainbow. The higher order rainbows are truly rare to observe.
Hans StockerParticipantA very beautiful smile of a circumzenithal cat Keelin.
Some more iridescence….

Hans StockerParticipantYes, I am happy the temporary glitch is solved Keelin. Back on track again now.
Washboard Winds shows wild streaks against a regular pattern of bands. Love it.

Weaving Patterns
Hans StockerParticipantI was not able to reply on this topic since Don posted his great B&W of Kansas. What clouds can do to a desolate looking vast landscape! A lot of energy in it.
Then I got the Shivers from what Keelin posted and got Tangled Up In Blue. Great composition by Keelin and Bob as well :)
And in Arizona cloudscape #89 I see some striking resemblances to what I spotted in Softscape and other Soft Clouds on the Color topic. Mr Holmboe must have been busy traveling and visiting both sides of the pond. Here is another one from that series.

Soft Explosions
Hans StockerParticipantHa, at last I am able to post a reply. For a week I had to bite my nails and had to watch passively new posts I wanted to reply to.
On this topic and others I have seen last week great pictures by the way. I am simply Swept Away by Updraft and even so by Arizona Color #108 (gentle colors for sure) and #109. What a peculiar formation you captured on t#109 Michael.
I love the feel of Crosswind Blues by Keelin and hope to stay in tune.

More Crosswinds
Hans StockerParticipantAh, In The Shallows, the boats can find shelter Keelin. And one can see the Seaweed Tangle. Love it.

Rippling
By the way: for some strange reason I can’t add a reply to the Optical Phenomena Volume III topic. When I try I get logged out. I reported it to Ian.
