In Sacsayhuamán, the great Inca ceremonial complex overlooking Cusco, immense stone walls frame views across the former imperial capital and reveal how architecture, sacred landscape and sky were woven together in Inca thought.
The Solstice Sky and Archaeoastronomy
We have planned this trip around the time of the June winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, a date of deep significance in the Inca calendar. This turning point of the year, when the Sun reaches its lowest path across the sky before beginning its return, was closely connected with ideas of renewal, fertility and the ordering of time.
With archaeoastronomer Andres Adasme as one of our guides, we will look at how Inca sites were aligned with the Sun, sacred mountains and important points on the horizon. Although the solstice Sun provides one of the clearest threads through our journey, we will also consider the wider Inca sky: the Milky Way, dark-cloud constellations and the way celestial patterns were understood as part of Incan cosmology. From Cusco to the Sacred Valley, and especially during our dawn visit to Pakaritampu, we will explore how the movements of the sky were woven into the design, mythology and ritual life of the Inca world.
What did the sky mean to the people of the Peruvian Andes 600 years ago? No one can know for sure, but the clues left by the Incas suggest it was of prime importance.

Sacred Sites of the Inca World
We will be visiting some of the most remarkable sacred landscapes of the Andes, from the great stone walls of Sacsayhuamán above Cusco to the ceremonial heart of Koricancha, once the most important temple in the Inca world. We will explore terraces, temples, fortresses and mountain sanctuaries where architecture, ritual and landscape were brought together with extraordinary precision.
As we travel through the Sacred Valley, visiting sites such as Pisaq, Ancasmarca, Choquecancha, Pumamarka and Ollantaytambo, we will consider how these places were shaped not just by human hands but by their relationship to the mountains, rivers and horizons around them. Central to our journey will be Machu Picchu, where cloud, stone and forest combine to create one of the most breathtaking archaeological settings on Earth.
Guided by archaeoastronomy expert Andres Adasme, we will be exploring the relationship between the sky and the ancient sites of the Peruvian Andes.
Sunlight reaches the terraces of Machu Picchu, where Inca stonework rises in stepped harmony with the mountain slopes above the Urubamba Valley.
Andean Hospitality and Living Culture
This Sky Holiday is not only about visiting ancient sites, but also about experiencing the living culture of the Andes today. Along the way, we will stay in atmospheric lodges and hotels chosen to bring us close to the landscapes we are exploring, from Cusco to the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.
There will be opportunities to enjoy Andean food, mountain hospitality and local traditions, including a Pachamama ceremony honouring Mother Earth. Together, these experiences will help us feel the continuity between past and present: between the ancient sky-watchers of the Andes and the communities who still live among these sacred mountains today.
The fine food, comfortable lodges, spectacular nature, and welcoming people of the Andes.
