A long range view of an Altocumulus volutus, otherwise known as a Roll cloud, extending northward 50 kilometers. In total, it was reported that this band extended 300 kilometers. This photograph was taken near Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Altocumulus volutus, also known as a Roll cloud, is a unique formation that is produced by atmospheric gravity waves. These invisible waves caused elongated areas of rising air that cooled enough to produce parallel bands of this cloud, upwards of 300 kilometres in length, spotted over New South Wales, Australia.
