ParticipantLove the layered look of your Stretched Sundog, Hans. And yes, that would be my guess about the circle in Held Spellbound. A bit of contrast helped bring the light to light.

ParticipantMichael, your #715 is like a dream shimmering into place. Love the soft focused moment you’ve captured there. And your latest (#716) keeps pulling me back for a closer look with those bits of sharply focused blue. Can’t say I’ve ever seen anything quite like this one!
And Hans, knowing how quickly a horseshoe vortex can disappear, you were again in just the might place at just the right time, doing just the right thing! How lucky can you get?

ParticipantThank you for kind words, Julie. Alas, not a writer. My guess is there must be something in those exquisite moments of stillness (which cloud watching seems to require) that simply untethers my mind. And when an irrepressible penchant for pareidolia is added to the mix, wordplay becomes irresistible.
If you take a stroll through some of the other forum topics (Clouds That Look Like Things and the many archived volumes of Black & White Cloud Photos come quickly to mind), you’ll soon come across some hilarious exchanges, especially with Hans who is exceptionally witty with his titles and commentary. Michael occasionally jumps in to share in the spirited fun as well. It’s just one more way our shared passion for clouds keeps us all connected.

ParticipantWelcome to the forum, Julie! And thank you for sharing this beautiful image of what’s above in the land down under. I love the celebratory feel of your first post–the joy is contagious! Have fun exploring the many topics here, and I hope to see more photos from you in days to come.

ParticipantBeautiful series, Hans! And yes, the change is moment to moment with these frisky chameleon/puppies. Even without color, these light phenomena still hold me spellbound.

ParticipantMichael, #714 has such a formidable, majestic feel, holding the mystery as to what it might be towering over. And Hans, your banner-like Waviness is wonder-ful.

ParticipantFantastic photo, gvpreo! And a perfect launch for this Halloween topic. Thank you for conjuring just the right spirit!
Alas, I spotted only a bony handful of spooky cloud characters flying through the skies since last Hallow’s Eve. Be that as it may, below is this year’s harvest. Warning: You may need to don pareidolia specs for this first one…
Twitchy Witchy on a midnight mission scouting for eye of newt? Having misplaced her broom, it looks like she’s had to hitch a ride on the back of a friend more accustomed to flying a hang glider.
She must have summoned her familiar, for now Something Toothy this way comes…
and a wandering wraith, cloaked in mist, rises to join them for a night of Tricks & Treats.

ParticipantWhile my mind naturally wants to make something perhaps nameable of what I see in your #166, Michael, the ambiguity of it proves an even greater delight. Wonderful!
No such mystery in the image below.

ParticipantLove that Wiggly loop in your image above the above, Hans. As for the one immediately above, what a timely capture!
In the image below (unfortunately quite grainy due to far distance), I liked the way the cloud seemed to curl over and press gently upon the jet trail. I suppose it’s one way to make an impression.

ParticipantThank you for well wishes, Hans. We are fortunate once again to be in a sweet, rare spot where PG&E has not cut power and flames still at a distance. Air quality is bad, but we cannot complain when others are in dicier situations. Your Harmless Ball Of Fire is one I can appreciate! A beautiful capture of color.
You have been missed and it’s a delight to see your return—a splendid reason for party poppers! As for that smile, I’m not sure why it posted twice, but yes, it is from the same event as the one you can see on the Color thread. That image shows the true orientation, but from a slightly different location.
