Nice lenticular formation Gregory. In my opinion they don’t care at all whether they hover above a town or not. Nevertheless a mountain or hill must be involved somewhere. The waves that can develop in the lee of a moutain can travel very far in the right conditions. That is to say that the air must be stable enough to prevent the wave-like layers of air to get disturbed. And then they pop up where the cooling of the air by rising of a layer with enough moist to cold enough heights betrays the position of the wave in the form of a lenticular cloud.
Any other opinions?
Great spotting Ari. The cropped picture shows indeed the stripes very well. Nothing is what it seems in my opinion. I think you spotted altocumulus and the stripes you see are undulatus. In fact the stripes betray the fact that we see here altocumulus at two different levels, so in the variety duplicatus. The stripes themselves are caused by shearing winds at that specific level. The winds cause the pattern of undulatus, just in the same way the wind does with the water: always with the pattern perpendicular to the wind. The undulatus seems to me at a lower level than the larger altocumulus clouds.

Great bird spotting Ruth with the bird of prey mirrored in the clouds. Unfortunately I have no Fellow Flyer like Keelin.

After some rain over here I already look forward for a lovely Cooling Cascade as you spotted Keelin, since we are in the middle of an high pressure area with just blue skies. Quite some weather changes over here lately. This one is just a few days ago.
