Daniel MitchellParticipant
Yeah, Keelin– that was a rarefied capture for sure and ranks up there in my top favorites. Very cool Splash of Intortus, btw.
Here’s the full set from that evening: https://cloudappreciationsociety.org/profile/?daniel1/photos/album/2511
Love the depth in “Squeeze of the Rainbow” Ruth- water to hills to sky, beautiful composition.
And Michael— #821, I might be tempted to coin, “Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble” if it weren’t so gorgeous (and it’s the wrong time of year… )
Another from my 6/11 set. I actually followed this one up the valley where it eventually grew and put in a pretty good lightning show:
Peaking Out of the Covers – By Baby Cumulonimbus
Daniel MitchellParticipantHoly cow, Hans! That is some rich sunset action! And your Blaze of Color, Ruth, reminds me of video I’ve seen of lava bombs splattering on the ground.
This one is a bit more subdued from the other night.
The Clouds Go Marching One by One
Daniel MitchellParticipantWow, Keelin— puts the Awe in Awesome! Never ceases to amaze me what Cirrus will come up with next…
The Cradle
Daniel MitchellParticipantPerfect, title for Entering the Atmosphere, Hans. Michael– #819 is crazy! Really cool whale in the sea of blue, Ruth, and what the heck is going on up there, Keelin? Love them all!
Another change of weather stirred things up again here yesterday and left my mouth watering and soul full of joy. Here’s a couple of my favs:
They’re … here….
Travail
In Flux
Daniel MitchellParticipantSeems like a theme of discombobulation going here Hans & Michael, so I’ll join in. Had some thunderstorms pass through quickly early on Sunday morning and really stirred things up here in the valley.

Daniel MitchellParticipantHey Meryl— thanks— actually on the ground down in the Willamette Valley, Oregon— just a big zoom lens going deep into the horizon, gives the illusion of being in the clouds, which I love :-)
And yep, Hans— all the same evening– put on quite a show for me over an hour and a half or so.
Daniel MitchellParticipantHans, Ruth, Meryl & Keelin— so many colors! Blues and purples, golds and oranges, reds and grays and browns and stirred up together– a veritable sky rainbow!
And welcome Meryl, to the forum- so glad you’ve joined in the fun :-)
Hans– thanks for kicking off the next volume as well.
I’m afraid I’ve been a bit preoccupied with kids at home, though I did manage to get out last night and was treated to a treasure-house of sunset deliciousness!
Daniel MitchellParticipantSo much color goodness from everyone! And a very warm welcome to all the new contributors— so glad you joined the party— you’ve already enriched the forums greatly :-)
Alas, not much color happening in the southern Willamette Valley the last few days, so I’ve plumbed the depths, taking Keelin’s lead, and pulled this one out of the cellar from this time last year.
Daniel MitchellParticipantI think your clouds are up to something, good, Hans! Let The Fun Begin, indeed, Keelin— your photo reminds me of underwater fumarole’s releasing gases on the ocean floor- very cool.
From day before yesterday, lot’s of Cirrus action, first time I’ve tried to get in close to Cirrus with a 600mm lens— it worked!
The Escape
Whispers on the Wind
Rifting
Daniel MitchellParticipantWelcome, Ruth!!! That’s really gorgeous :-)
Daniel MitchellParticipantLove the depth in #511, Michael— and the pinks, whoa Hans, in Some Light Still Squeaks Through— wow.
From night before last, right at the edge of sunset getting in tight with a 600mm:
Vornacht
Daniel MitchellParticipantHey, I wanted to give this one some special attention from last evening— this is the first time I’ve directly observed what appears to be Cirrocumulus Lacunosus.
Is this the right identification do you think? Should I post over in the Identification topic?
I was a bit stunned and a bit giddy at how remarkable the sort of pock-marked texture is– really made me wonder what the wind and temperature up there are doing to create these.
First shot is a crop of the upper-right of the second shot to really show the texture up close. Second shot is the context.
Thoughts?
Daniel MitchellParticipantFlowers and Towers reign (or rain) Hans and Michael!
Here’s some Willamette Valley goodness from last night.
Wisps of Wonder
Weather or Not – It Matters
A Spritely Journey
Fractal Delight
Daniel MitchellParticipantHans—- Someone is Watching almost looks like fabric- amazing! The angles in #805 are really cool Michael— and such variety in Silent Swimmer, Keelin— almost fractal.
My add for the evening—-
Cirrusly ConfusedDaniel MitchellParticipantSo cool to see that is a ‘normal’ December Arizona sky— we don’t get much of that up here in the Valley in Oregon.
Steven— here’s the sunrise shot I was talking about over the Sea of Cortez facing east one February morning in 2015. Temps got up into the mid-80s that day. This week on the coast was the only time I’ve ever done sunrise sessions— and I was up and shot every day.
Two very different looks for the same east facing sunrise (also two different locations along the beach).
