ParticipantI joined CAS in 2007 and have never heard of a red rainbow. But google has them aplenty. Beginner’s luck or great observing, whichever, many thanks, James. Keep ’em coming.

ParticipantFunnily enough pushing the top of my laptop screen away has a different effect on this picture from George’s; it seems to enhance the dark thus breaking the cloud up. I think I am on dodgy ground here – Caveat Emptor.
Howard Brown
ParticipantWell!. You are right, of course, MikeL; how could I have had a moment’s doubt.
I think I got a similar effect by pushing the top of my laptop screen away – George passes the asperitas test that way.

EDIT: The best laid plans. I was expecting to link to the two Polish planes – it turns out they are in the tenth row of pairs of pictures…

ParticipantI heard on the BBC radio that big insurane companies are pushing for an end to fossil fuel subsidies – it seems they are not alone
This G20 must push COP21 agenda by ending fossil fuel subsidies

ParticipantBall lightning
Paul Simons, Weather Eye, The Times (UK) 29AUG16, wrote about the effects of ball lightning on two ships. The second one was moored off Portsmouth (UK) on 19FEB1809, HMS Warren Hastings. Three balls of fire hit it – Wired has an article which references it:
https://www.wired.com/2009/02/great-balls-of/
P.S. I wrote the https link – presumably CAS replaced the link by the headline.

ParticipantHi, George, and welcome. It is certainly worth asking the question as you have the undulation. In the link below contorted and turbulent are mentioned:
P.S. The name changed to ‘Asperitas’ around 7/15.

ParticipantLt.-Col. William Rankin
Some of you will have read in The Cloudspotter’s Guide (2006) about this US pilot who on 26JUL59 had to eject at 47,000ft at the top of a cumulonimbus and lived to tell the story. Paul Simons chose to tell the story in The Times (UK) 8AUG16.

ParticipantMikeL, you are right – so Rothko-like I can scarce believe it

ParticipantWell, the short answer is ‘no’, in fact I do not seem to have any pictures on this new forum, and but a few on the old one. I have two competent cameras but even if I take the odd snapshot I never seem to get round to uploading it to this forum. I only have experience of one other forum, a university forum in NW USA (it was in relation to a maple tree) and I thought that was much easier to use e.g. you did not have to worry about size, and could, I think, just link to the photo on your own computer.
It is much easier just to enjoy the experts like Mike Lerch (‘Michael’).

ParticipantNot recommended for clouds, but about 35 minutes into the Germany Highlights programme they briefly show how they use a drone to film the rally cars. It appears you need two people, a pilot and a cameraman:

ParticipantI can see what you mean, Maribel. I flickred (not a correct word the system tells me but no matter) thru your album and muchly enjoyed it – it’s great to see someone appreciating their sky, and particularly the sky light. Thank you.

ParticipantAh! Somewhere near the beginning of this new CAS Forum I explained a little about ‘hygge’ when I changed my sign-on name from beacontrigpoint on the old CAS Forum. But I am a (UK) Hampshire Hog, Soren, and I expect the ‘o’ in my Soren will not look like the one from you and Bastian.
I will admit that I borrowed the name hygge from an advertising tag by the clothing chain Mint Velvet which referenced the Danish art.
More importantly I would like to add my thanks to all the moderators back at CAS HQ who are key to CAS’ success, and keep me a happy hobbyist.
Howard Brown
ParticipantGoodness me, MikeL, how do you find ’em. A technical cloudspotter’s delight, as per usual, then that touch of apophenia (a long whiskered feline to me, but many other interpretations no doubt possible); you are probably wise to offer it with a neutral title.
