That would have to be a long shot … my guess would be a frontal system approaching from the southwest. What’s the date the photograph was taken? The Bureau of Meteorology have a weather chart archive which would give us a clue.

That’s marvelous. The formation is not unusual but being in the right place at the right time to get this view of it is. This looks like two cumulonimbus rain columns beside each other, hence the symmetry. It would be interesting to know whether the two merged and the gap closed … they’re certainly touching bumpers.

It looks like a layer sitting right in that transition zone from supercooled droplets to ice crystals, i.e. higher end of altostratus to lower end of cirrus which would also explain the cavum (or cava, to be exact).

That’s definitely a CB as they’re known in the aviation world; not a massive monster but something I would advise student pilots to avoid with a good margin in light aircraft.
