Michael LerchParticipantHello Marie. My name is Mike . I live in Phoenix Az. We have a monsoon season from July to September and I’ve seen examples of what you have captured. I think wind is the key element. Winds pushing around sluggish cumulus creates a lot of eddies and whirlpools where clouds in transition take place. Below are two pictures of the same general direction maybe 15 minutes apart. Stratus manifests itself around convectus and nimbus cumulus. When I see that I fear for some heavy rain before its over. So I think you caught some humidty getting condescended out of the atmosphere on its way to be a whole sheet of stratus…or fail in trying. The winds may have proved to be too much.

Michael LerchParticipantThank you Ruth. Barely there but just enough.

Michael LerchParticipantRuth, Yes both pics where shot during the same late afternoon event. Did 241 evolve into 242? possibly, but I cant guarantee it.

Michael LerchParticipantWelcome Bill!..Nice shot! Have fun. Down here in Az we got a Pineapple Monsoon this winter so it didn’t really stop storming. The local lakes got filled up with all the clouds tho. Good fortune!

Michael LerchParticipantKeelin, the trees are scratching an itch in the sky.Nice shot. Im not sure what I caught there Hans but it turned into this below. If I recall one system from the southwest and one from the northwest converged over the Phoenix area. But the mystery, like Keelins sky.. it feels organic, it could be alive
