Some great work by all in Vol 13. 100 photos of fun. So here’s another 100 starting with a bit of nastiness that went up the highway I-17 here in Phoenix in July’22.

Keelin, the trees are scratching an itch in the sky.Nice shot. Im not sure what I caught there Hans but it turned into this below. If I recall one system from the southwest and one from the northwest converged over the Phoenix area. But the mystery, like Keelins sky.. it feels organic, it could be alive

Michael, I really like the very threatening building cumulus in your image.  I especially like that you also caught a little pilius at the top of one of the buildups.  It looks like the folks on the ground might be getting wet.

    • #571929
      Michael Lerch avatarMichael Lerch

Thanks Bill.  The north hills  of the Valley ,that is Phoenix, greet the monsoon season by displaying shows of towering congestus some succeed all the way to nimbus. But along the way a lot ,or a few,  pileus  are created . The contrast of such a delicate expression by raw unleashed power fascinates.  It takes days of 110f  to pull up the moisture from the subtropics and if you’re really lucky a dust storm, haboo,  accomplices the show. I don’t think humans were meant to go out in this weather that creates pileus but I use a zoom telephoto lens when I do  which reaches out pretty far at the 300mm end.

Great pileus series Michael. Such thin veils played by the winds around cumulus. Her we had yesterday a display of a lot of pileus. Because it is more rare over here it was discussed in the daily weather report. Very nice.

Well here we are Ruth last day of July and all we got,is one day of monsoon build up and back flow into the Valley..One day of about half an hour of rain in total. I shot more Pileus in March than I have all of July. A week ago, today and tomorrow were projected to be rainy days. Now sunny tomorrow and the following week with ever increasing to the 110f + dayz. The good news is today it did not hit 110f…Point is..the summer’s monsoon was projected to be weaker than norm. But we had a pineapple monsoon ( the weather came directly from Hawaii) this last winter , filling the local reservoirs with another year or two of time to figure out how to stretch that to 4 to 5 years…Like your Big Sky shot of the undulatus signaling active winds at various heights.May August see a return of the high pressure center to the rightful  owners ,4 Corners , restoring a monsoon season to at least a Thank You for showing up.  Some fun with crepuscular follows.

Previous record for a string of 110f + days in a row, consecutively ,  in Phoenix ,was 18..I think we just ended the streak of 31 days in row of reaching 110f + ..all of July..it hit 110f or More..for  everyday in the month of July..in Phoenix..There is only 2 places one can be when you step out side..in a pool or in something that has A/C..The Citrus  tree leaves got burnt. The mulberry trees got burnt.Don’t forget the bombardment of Xrays and CME’s coming from our one and only Sun as it ramps up it current building solar cycle (24?)..Its definitely long sleeve season if you are out side for long periods of time. Its so hot out there the local pawn shop won’t take it…oh well..

The winds curl the clouds and create velum. Nice capture.

Michael, an oppressive summer with the awful heat.  In my area there are close to 12 fires.  Only thing is the great pyro cumulus clouds that I have seen on the local TV.  Tomorrow may be rain and 70 degrees.  I can’t wait.  Beautiful rays in your photo.  They are one of my favorite optical effects.

So refreshing on cloudless summer days to see the gorgeous captures from you all. Last month, we had this reminder of penmanship practice. Pretty much had a blank slate since then.

Michael, to me that looks like a winter scene with trees covered in snow and hills in the background.

Michael, as always your pileus are awesome.  My favorite is the twin towers in #1446.

Keelin, Cursive is way fun.  I now print instead of nice long hand.

Thanks Ruth!..Would you believe yesterday was the first day of pileus formation as a result of the “monsoon”  season?..and even at that it was a poor show due to winds ripping the delicate pileus loosing their smoothness. Today the winds brought the moisture from the suntropics but it all kept rite on going.Nothing hung around to even precipitate..

Thanks Bill..For me,Clouds always brings the “water color” perspective..photographed in a way to lend themselves to be seen as a watercolor illustration. I mean, they are made of water and light plays well  within them. I suppose thats the fun I refer to when I capture clouds.

And now a hurricane is spinning up the Baja coast hopefully casting arms of asperitas our way..Southern California may be the main recipient of any largess tho. Nice light and wisp you caught.

Michael, thanks on your wisp comment.  That was taken with my phone.  I prefer my point and shoot camera, but it worked just fine.

I love Lights Out, Ruth. Geat colors and composition. Maybe a bit late, but I love Cursive Cloudscript too, Keelin. Michael you keep amazing with #1450 the winter landscape according to Bill), #1453 and the three fingers in #1454.
