“A 60 second exposure of the night sky around 11pm in Iceland. There are some small lenticular clouds and one in the distance appears orange from the glow of a small settlement….makes it look like the aliens are coming”.

Hey John, Nice Pic, from a freindly Cloud spotter in Harlow
-
Benjamin Jung says:
That’s definitely real. The fallstreak consists of falling ice crystals and they create the optical effect (halo) called Circumzenithal Arc (look at the categories). Because the ice crystals are like glass prisms, they reflect and refract the light more effectively than waterdrops (rain), which makes the colours more intense than a rainbow can possibly be.

a bridge across the parting of the Red Sea reflected in the sky?
-
John Rowlands says:
Wow! Is that CZA real, or a photoshop effect? I’m just a bit confused by the intensity of the colours in places, especially the blues.
