The main formations spotted here over Oregon, US, are known as Altocumulus castellanus, they take their name from their resemblance to the turrets of castles and are often a warning of thunderstorms, as Sallie confirmed later in the day, proved correct.

I sat on Penarfynydd once and watched an example of this moving in across the sea. The air behind the line was visibly of a different quality to the air ahead – a difference that is impossible to describe except with vague references to clarity and colour.
