    George,

The online paper you found in the journal Weather has contact details for the authors.  I Googled Schultz, and I found that he’s still at Manchester University:

    https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/david.schultz.html.

I think it would be worth contacting him, sharing your photo with him, and asking for his view on how your upward features were formed – his paper deals with below and sideways formation, but not upwards.

Let us know what the outcome is – we are all interested.

Note that the picture with ‘upward’ lobes that you mention (his Fig. 6, I think) is of Kelvin-Helmholtz, which are not the same at all, but are still very interesting.  I love K-H formations, which are relatively rare.

I have a question about ‘your’ contrail – what was its behaviour to the left and right of the area of your photo?

Plus, I think we all need to keep our eyes open and start to make notes of any contrails we see that develop this feature, whether up or down.  This will provide a good statistical data-set so that we can understand how rare are the upward formations, and if the direction can change along a contrail.  A fun bit of “Citizen Science”.

    Hi Emily,

I was in Oslo and Bergen last year.  I don’t recall any cloud photos in the National Gallery in Oslo, but there were some that stuck in my mind in one of the Kode galleries in Bergen (Kode 2, I think), by Johann Christian Dahl, and they fit your description perfectly – small pictures, narrow space.  However, just the one artist.

They struck me as being very like the many sky studies by the English artist John Constable (some of which I saw in a small gallery in Woking about 18 months ago).

I shall find my photos from Bergen and post one or two here, but they are not very good because the lighting was poor.  You might need to be patient…

    Regards,

    Doctor_NO.

hygge – thanks for the link, that’s very helpful of you and I am much obliged. Looks like I’ll HAVE to post something now – no excuse, nowhere to hide, but a little more thought required first (now where DID I put those notes I made?).

Early bird or insomniac? Saying that, the early morning clouds today are nicely lit by the low sun.

    Best,

    Hi Jim,

I’ve been rumbled! It was indeed me who had the pleasure of sitting next to you in the lecture theatre and talking to you during the day. It was nice to meet you and other members.

See you at the next one?

I shall be there as well, although not a regular poster here. I’m looking forward to meeting others, hearing some interesting talks and re-acquainting myself with that part of London (I studied Chemistry at Imperial College, just down the road).
