CA Drought
We heard Andrew Kirk in the Owens Valley complaining of the drought some time back; seemingly little change:

Howard BrownParticipantVive La France
Various guests on BBC radio tonight have nothing but praise for French diplomacy in handling the Paris Climate Conference; and have expectation of a reasonable outcome.
So fingers crossed.
Howard BrownParticipantThe Met Office Chief Scientist (at the end of the link) gets close to linking climate change with the recent flooding in Cumbria, UK:
Howard BrownParticipantThank you for that link Poth – I had seen bits live in the news but not got round to searching for Liam Dutton’s clip.

‘Carbon Capture Storage
Five years ago, amid much fanfare, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, committed £1 billion to the development of carbon capture and storage – the technology to extract carbon dioxide from the exhaust streams of power stations, and bury it underground. This technology is one strategy for reducing our impact on the climate while keeping coal, oil and gas as options for generating energy. Given the discussions going on right now over in Paris at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21, this might seem like a suitable commitment for the UK’s plans to address global warming. But in the recent Comprehensive Spending Review, the Government have withdrawn the money, effectively ending the current CCS research in the UK.’Howard BrownParticipant27 minute radio program: ‘Biosphere 2 is an Earth systems science research facility – a mini model of the Earth where scientists can carry out controlled experiments in different environments’
Howard BrownParticipantA great ho, ho, or tee hee, Naomi, many thanks. I wonder if the CAS Shop will offer the suit?
Graham Davis (as in posts above) will not be a fan.

Howard BrownParticipantMichael, it is a question that has intrigued me, probably due to the Green Flash in the atoptics index. If you go to the CAS Old Forum and search ‘green’ there are several posts though I don’t recall one that would answer your question:
A lady in Queensland talks of green clouds – see also the next link. This link offers several answers, but does not mention MikeL’s charged electrons as above (spot-on picture, MikeL):
http://optics.kulgun.net/GreenClouds/green_clouds.shtmlEric M. Wilcox, Clouds, 2008 (with a Foreword by Gavin Pretor-Pinney) shows this Eddie Soloway picture on pp40-41 (you can enlarge it with repeated ‘Ctl+’):

The caption says ‘Of all the signs of threatening weather offered to us by clouds, perhaps none is as ominous as the thunderstorm with a green hue. Anecdotally, such a scene is thought to be advance warning of a tornado; although this is not always the case, the filtering of sunlight that creates this optical effect can be an indication that heavy rain, high winds and lightning are not far off’.Lastly google ‘green clouds’ for a selection of comments.
Howard BrownParticipantBest of luck with this link, Jean-Michel
Howard BrownParticipantWell, they say fools rush in, so I will vote yes; but I can see from your link why you exercise some caution in posing the question. I guess you could check against the North Star (but is that ‘true’ north) since you seem to be one of the lucky ones with a vista. In suburbia a vista is not what I get.
And I have never seen anti-crepuscular.
Howard BrownParticipantCaveat emptor – Atoptics index
Catherine I should have said that Atoptics warns that its index is not perfect e.g. when Andrew Kirk posted an Alpenglow picture I wanted to go back to it later but had forgotten the word, beyond it started with A… I am sure the subject is discussed though.
Howard BrownParticipantHallo, Catherine and welcome aboard. That was a great observation of yours, so thanks for bringing it to us. I certainly was curious and enjoyed learning from Gavin’s explanation.
On general things of this nature there is a favourite site for the CAS Forum:
Go to the atoptics home page and click on Search at the lower right and you can find Crepuscular rays.
Howard BrownParticipantMikeL, I think this one really comes across as 3D. What fun indeed; and almost a hint of K-H at top right. Ta ever so.
‘H’
Howard BrownParticipantA few in this BBC gallery on Fog are above the cloud.
