ParticipantThere you go. I always said you had a good eye for a picture, Laurence – I was just about to post that one having seen the picture in The Times and the Independent, but the BBC write up is the best..
Fascinating. Cool in the jargon I suppose.

ParticipantHallo, Vicki, and welcome. Great picture, quite duskular (Andrew Kirk’s word).
Let me quote Richard Hamblyn, The Met Office Pocket Cloud Handbook, on cumulus:
These convective clouds are formed above thermals (columns of ascending air) that rise in plumes from the sun-warmed ground… Seeding themselves on condensation nuclei – microscopic grains of dust, smoke, pollen or sea salt that are naturally present in the air – the rising pockets of water vapour expand and cool until they reach the dew point (the temperature at which water vapour condenses into droplets), at which point their payload of moisture condenses and coalesces into clouds.
Thus it is the dew point which causes the flat base.

Coming into our lives. Picture looks like flammable cumulus…

This guy seems to photograph land art and exploit cloud

ParticipantThat’s impressive, Davy, apophenic perhaps, in the sense of MS’ Danah Boyd whose website says of apophenia ‘making connections where none previously existed’.
I am not too sure what you are connecting clouds to, though. Poetry? Song? Rap?
Howard Brown
ParticipantThat sounds interesting, Geoff. I must google the SkySpace. I am always intrigued by land art. The latest I read about was
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/past-six-days/2017-04-08/saturday-review/andy-goldsworth-the-natural-world-is-not-confined-to-fields-and-woods-vx70h9jd5The article does not actually say land art, but what else. In case you face a price barrier I will highlight a few things from the article
* ‘Leaning into the wind: Andy Goldsworthy’ is the title of a new film, sequel to ‘Rivers and Tides’ 2001.(see YouTube)
* It’s all about “lineage” in this artist’s world
* He travels to see difference and stays put to witness change
* As well as permanent sculptures he makes ephemeral pieces – a huge photographic archive charts these and forms the basis of his booksThe problem for CAS is that land artists don’t seem to put clouds at the fore. But the necessity for photographs reminds me of the CAS Forum B&W threads where contributors are creating an abstract art form of cloud photos…. capturing the ephemeral.

ParticipantThe Biblical 10 Plagues related to a volcanic eruption. Interesting, with some stormy clouds thrown in for good measure.

ParticipantYep, enjoyable, Laurence, thanks.
But the CAS gospel (Handbook) gives arcus (p53) as the pertinent supplementary feature; arcus protuding forward becomes shelf; more rarely arcus separating becomes roll (p53) – most roll clouds are types of arcus (p67).
Howard Brown
ParticipantHallo, Heather. You are right, there was such an on-line document. CAS took it down some time after The Cloud Collector’s Handbook, by Gavin Pretor-Pinney, 2009, was published. They gave no explanation.
At the time I did demur because I would often look up the hardcopy Handbook and point to a page in that on-line doc. when I posted something on the Forum. I did wonder if it was to do with intellectual property and/or an intent to publish an on-line Handbook.

Participant‘BBC weather expert Paul Hudson said the natural phenomenon was technically called a roll cloud and was quite rare’
I suggest it’s technically the new ICA species ‘volutus’. How say you?
Fascinating indeed, Laurence. I remember being snowed up in JFK and watched Concorde fly in then out to my chagrin.

ParticipantJamie, a promise of great things to come – welcome. I was about to say it has been a while since we heard from down under, but it seems you are in Hong Kong. I guess the stormchasers are with you on the typhoons, but I just heard from a friend in Dallas, Tx, very relieved to have been missed recently. On local radio here in Hants, UK, a stormchaser was about to fly out on holiday to Dallas – guess he timed it well. Talk about mixed feelings.
