The last day of summer?

Paul Simons’ Weather Eye column in The Times (UK) 30AUG2016 talked of the weather 200 years ago being cold and wet. He mentioned Turner’s ‘Lancaster Sands’ showing the bleak weather – Google gives several versions but I chose this rather abstract one (which reminded me of Christina Ulander on the CAS home page 2SEP2016 – but oddly I can not get there from here, ‘NEWS’ starting at 24AUG2016):
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/work/D/D25/D25132_10.jpgSimons calls 31AUG1816 the last day of that summer, but was he right? I thought the last day of the UK summer was the Autumn equinox until the Met Office changed to 1SEP in recent times.
P.S. Gavin-Pretor Pinney at the Tate in 2007 (?) q.v. seems no longer viewable on this forum.
