Paul Simons’ Weather Eye column in The Times (UK) 30AUG2016 talked of the weather 200 years ago being cold and wet. He mentioned Turner’s ‘Lancaster Sands’ showing the bleak weather – Google gives several versions but I chose this rather abstract one (which reminded me of Christina Ulander on the CAS home page 2SEP2016 – but oddly I can not get there from here, ‘NEWS’ starting at 24AUG2016):

Simons calls 31AUG1816 the last day of that summer, but was he right? I thought the last day of the UK summer was the Autumn equinox until the Met Office changed to 1SEP in recent times.

P.S. Gavin-Pretor Pinney at the Tate in 2007 (?) q.v. seems no longer viewable on this forum.
