The new name for asperatus. Click on the Photography Competition heading on the Home page for details. (Sadly I had not done this so I thought the Paul Simons’ Weather Eye column in The Times Friday June 19 2015 had a typo. GP-P was kind enough to explain and luckily I had not contacted The Times with An Indignant Hampshire Hog e-mail).

      For the purists, GP-P explained:
‘The new name is a noun (‘roughness’) because it has been accepted as a ‘supplementary feature’ rather than a variety of cloud and supplementary features are given Latin nouns as names.’

I am not sure of the pronunciation. I assume it rhymes with veritas, and the emphasis moves to the ‘e’. (Assuming the emphasis in asperatus was on the second ‘a’).

      ‘H’
