Remnants of contrails that form into high level cirrus clouds via homogenitus, which is when clouds develop as a result of human activity such as from aircraft condensation trails; i.e., contrails. In this instance, it has taken on the look of "feathers" in this view near El Dorado Hills, California, US.

I didn’t really take the shot for the appearance of the rainbow as such, but for the fact that the rainbow was visibly behhind the pannus. (As always, by the time I had picked up the camera, things had moved beyond the best – but I managed to catch a bit.)
How can anyone resist a beautiful sight like this?
They might not be rare, but there’s always room for another rainbow.
Thanks, David!
