In early June, Kathleen Janick (Member 49,856) and her husband celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary by watching the sunset overlooking Billings Cove, Deer Isle, Maine, US. ‘Not only was the sky ablaze,’ Kathleen recalled, ‘it looked like the Sun was shooting a fiery red beam into the sky.’ They had spotted a sun pillar, an optical effect caused by low-angle sunlight reflecting off the undersides of ice crystals in the Altocumulus clouds. ‘It was very special,’ said Kathleen. ‘We felt the Sun was putting on a show just for us.’
