Hi Bill, John & Sandra, thanks for the wonderful comments they are truely appreciated. Bill I have been experimenting with digital B&W on and off for a while now with limited success> The bird just happened to be in the right place at the right time!!
-
John Norris says:
I agree with Bill`s comments and yes B+W is not dead, Great image Wayne.
-
Bill Tranter says:
An absolute stunner, and that bird is in exactly the right position – had you trained it? Your photo shows that B+W is not dead yet! Well done!

Hello all,
For those interested; this image is a composite of three images stitched together using PSE5 Photomerge. Taken with a Nikon D70, shot in RAW, F/11, manual metering, exposure and focus. RAW files rendered with Abode LightRoom. Taken early morning 2 days ago, this rainbow preceded heavy rain from the south (left) prior to an equestrian event.
Kindest regards
Wayne Brasch

Thanks GW, I quite like B&W and have been playing around with various digital B&W processes. Actually I either like lots of colour or none at all. 7 out of the 11 image I have submitted to CAS are in B&W!
Thanks Grizzly, sort of does have a few HK characteristics! Actually about a month before I took this shot I did see my first and perfect HK just west (to the right) of where this image was taken. You guessed it, I didn’t have my camera with me. At the time I was working and although I only live about 100 meters from where I work, at the time I was taking and injured bird to the bird recovery centre just up the road. Within 5 minutes the HK had all but vanished, no photo but I have the memory!
-
It almost looks like a KH wave cloud except it’s on a horizontal axis instead of a vertical one. Anyone else think that?

Thanks for the comments.
Jill I was using a Marumi Circular Polarizing filter to help prevent blowing out the hightlights in the clouds. It was used at maximum polarization (90 degree angle to the sun) and the bi-product was the deep blue sky.
-
Gerard. says:
Great sense of depth;the Cumulus almost floats out of the picture.Love it!
-
Granny Weatherwitch a.k.a Jill says:
Nice clouds, but you overdid the sky filter and/or contrast adjustment (I guess a filter which has graduated blue colouring from the top downwards). Overhead sky just doesn’t get that inky-black in the daytime, especially in sunlight! Try a polarising filter instead, or hold polarised sunglasses in front of the lens to try this out before buying a camera filter.

Absolutely stunning pic! Unfortunately, on the occasions we headed over to Piha to try to get a glimpse, the conditions weren’t good for viewing. Would have loved to have seen the real thing. (Wayne, there is a PM for you over at the mnz forums)
