from Christopher Fernie

Christopher Fernie has written a number of poems inspired by clouds and wrote to us saying that he would like to dedicate this one to the Society; it was written in 2006 and first appeared on the poetry website, Poetbay.

CLOUDS

They are celestial continents in the sky,
Kaleidoscopic countries passing by,
Thousands of islands of outstretched cotton wool,
Dirigible domes that would grace earthbound Istanbul,
Purple heather-clouds in heavenly highlands,
Italianate walls of white and pink marble bands,
Himalayan moisture-mountains about to avalanche,
Cowboys on horseback galloping back to the ranch,
Necklaces of coral cirrus reflecting the fading light,
Migratory black beasts foreshadowing the night.
