In order for the Cloud-a-Day emails to arrive first thing in the morning across all the world’s time zones, the system has to lock down the mailing list some time in advance. This means that there is always a delay in the first one arriving as it all depends on when things get lined up to send. I can see that you are definitely on the list to receive the Cloud a Day. Sometimes the timings go weird at the beginning as the system works out what time zone you are in.
Below are links to the recent Cloud a Days, and you should definitely get it tomorrow morning. If it doesn’t arrive, please email us here and we’ll root out the problem!Cloud a Day – Thursday 5th May
Cloud a Day – Friday 6th May
Cloud a Day – Saturday 7th MayGavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterMuch appreciated, Craig and Eric!
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterHans,
Thanks for your comments and thoughts. We know that the mobile scrolling still doesn’t work quite right in certain circumstances. We are working on the load times. The square format for the thumbnails is what we are planning to stick with because otherwise they don’t stack neatly, since some are wide landscapes and others portrait. We are beginning to use rather larger images on the gallery, computer screens have grown. For this reason, we are no longer limiting the size of submissions. We decided to change the five stars to a like system because we thought it nicer, since letting visitors give photographers single star ratings for their clouds seemed pointlessly critical. We are indeed changing the image selection for the homepage, and will continue to do so. We’ve slowed the transitions a bit, but they could probably do with being slower still.
Thanks again for your suggestions!Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterGeoff, you don’t need to be spotting new clouds to get those badges. All the spottings can be of cloud types that you’ve collected before. The only important thing is that they are verified as correct by our moderators. So good to go for safe one if you are aiming to get these. By the way, there can sometimes be an issue for badges with timezones for users in countries far from Europe. It is all about the server incorrectly judging when one day ends and another starts. Sometimes, we have to correct things manually. This won’t, of course, apply in your case.
(You are quite right that it is daft to be worrying about these things, aged 65 – and there’s nothing wrong with that!)Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterJim, the profile photo looks great!
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterBy the way, why not use one of your Cumulus photos as your profile picture? You can set your profile pic by clicking on your name on this page and and then going to Profile > Change Profile Photo.
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterJim, when you first have your spotting of a cloud type verified as correct, you receive the stars that that type of cloud is worth. This depends on the rarity of the cloud. The common ones are only worth only one or two stars, while the rare clouds are worth five. once you have had an example of that type of cloud verified, subsequent spottings of the same type don’t earn you any more stars. You’ve received them for that type of cloud and that’s it. We don’t want users to get lots of points just by spotting the same cloud type over and over. The rewards are for learning all the different types.
Hope that helps clarify things!Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterThanks, Donna. It is great that you like the new direction!
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterThanks Michael and thanks Bert. We really appreciate your feedback.
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterI agree, Noctilucy, that the punctuation is rather small in the typeface for the website. We will try to look at this once we have finally got all the critical fixes sorted out!
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterJim, that means that the moderators decided that those were not clear examples of the clouds that you submitted them as. When a submission is in the pending state, you’ll see the thumbnail is dimmed with a clock icon over it. Once it has been looked at by a moderator, it is no longer dimmed. It’s is shown as ‘Unverified’ if the moderator judged that it isn’t clearly an example of the cloud. Remember, in many cases, it it hard for the moderators to be sure from a small photo. For instance, the distinctions are blurry between clouds like a low clumpy layer called Stratocumulus, a mid-level clumpy layer called Altocumulus and a high clumpy layer called Cirrocumulus. So it is a matter of judgement. Over time, as you get used to what does and doesn’t get through, you will naturally spot examples that are unequivocal. Because the decisions tend to be open to debate, we prefer to say ‘unverified’ rather than ‘incorrect’.
I hope this helps.Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterThanks Hygge and Geoff. I will start a topic about the new website design so that comments can all be in one place. I might keep this one separate, however, as it started off being specifically about Martha’s photo.
Marsha, I have changed the setting on your account so that you appear on the forum as Noctilucy. If you want to change the way you appear, I believe you can do so by clicking on your name here in the Forum to open your profile page. There, you can click on Profile and then on Edit to change the way that your name appears on the site as a whole. In the Profile bit, you can also add a profile photo.
We’ve also just darkened the body font of the website. Does it work better now?
Thanks for all your comments.
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterHi, Martha.
The photo gallery is the part of the new website that still needs lots of work following the site redesign. The search function at the top of the site is not currently accessing the images correctly. We are just sorting out issues with member logins, etc, and after that will get to work on getting the gallery working right. Some of the problem is just to do with the search function. It is finding the old page for your image, which no longer shows the comments. Here is the one, which does show the comments, that it should have found:

Thanks for your patience while we are getting things ironed out!Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterGreat one, Paul. Thanks for posting it.
Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterYes, Geoff is right, everything stays the same as it currently is for all our existing members – their Member Number stays the same and they continue to get our occasional newsletter as well as member discounts here and there. All our current members now, however, have the option to subscribe to our Cloud-a-Day service. They can do this either by getting a standard Member Upgrade (which brings a few other benefits like 10% off the shop) or, if they want to help the society grow and develop, they can become a Supporting Member, which gets them 15% off the shop and will bring free access to the video courses we are working on for the future, as well as the web conference we have planned.
We were delighted to see that you have, like Geoff, decided to try out being a Supporting Member. If you choose to stick with the subscription it will be really fantastic to have you onboard a Supporting Member. We hope you’ll find the Cloud a Day a good way to start your morning.
