Michael LerchParticipanthyg..Fascinating,, Cloudspotter’s Guide has Stratiformis as Species of the mentioned Clouds, and is specific to..”.extend over a large area”; widespread indeed. To illustrate, a few pics from April 2015 sightings of the Lacunosus. The first gives a scale, yes that is the Superstition Mtns, pic taken from near work. Second shot is almost directly over head with some sun halo. The field seemed to mature out of nowhere as I took pics of what you see in the first shot. Third shot is a week later at my home. As I recall, a good wind is involved in moving these observed fields of lacunosus. There is suggestion of undulatus in the 2nd shot. Both events were at altocumulus levels, that is, higher than the first set of photographed lacunosus.

Michael LerchParticipantAhh! hygge, a more correct appellation of species would be stratoformis, which as you point out, can be stratocumulus, altocumulus , cirrocumulus and even noctillucent. That lacunosus is stratified, horizontally displayed and at that, manifested over large swaths of sky, makes for challenging photo sessions . The above field of lacunosus was photographed close to work, the east valley . The lacunosus was the lowest I’ve ever witnessed allowing for a better perception of depth of the cloud structure. No mamma, just that the white is actually above the grey structure of lacunosus. This display, is one of the thinnest or least dense displays of the woven. The pic below was taken a few months later almost directly over my house. The lacunosus is denser . Interestingly, the field traveled from south east to north north west rather than the norm of sw to ne.

..and there are 3 more from the same shoot
Michael LerchParticipant
Yes Graham, thank you for your concern and direction. I used that method on the first pic I posted on the developing New Forum. True, it works, but for me its yet another album to be kept organized and managed,,but it works…
Michael LerchParticipantGPD..My understanding is that CAS is in development of becoming a “secure” website..hence the HTTPS and, TINYPIC service isn’t ,or hasn’t offered or received a certificate etc etc..so I gave Flickr a try and as you can see..I couldn’t get any of FLICKR’s links to work either. I’m being told that the whole CAS site gets a revamp within a month or so and downloading photos will be much easier. Yes..everything I’ve ever downloaded thru TINYPIC..is gone.

Michael LerchParticipantNice Win for Poth on the Cloudy Horse ! A Fortunate venture !
I find the lighting around sunsets and sunrises produces soft greys as opposed to the high contrasts of mid day sun .

Michael LerchParticipantClouds at various elevations going in different directions creates shear which creates Undulatus.

Michael LerchParticipantThanks Gini! Unfortunately ,I am not a billionaire..;)
Below are three variations of seeing thru clouds that are at different elevations. I like taking these kind of pics because I’m never sure of what I’m going to end up with.

Michael LerchParticipantA Cloud Expression in Subtlety

Michael LerchParticipantAnd two more that came together…

Michael LerchParticipantThe inexpense of digital photography allows for a ” freedom” that silently screams to be taken advantage of.

Michael LerchParticipantThank You Gini! Here is one I’ve been working on;

Michael LerchParticipantDigital Stitching doesn’t have to be just for landscape shots…Take a photo. Save it. Then take same photo,,flip it. Save it (preferably to Desk Top ). Then take the left and the right version and ” photo stitch” them together..
Two examples:

Michael LerchParticipantGraham, Nice treatise! I hadn’t heard of the rainbow in the morning jinx. Good catch on the reversal of the warning on the 13th! Funny! But the truth of carrying a camera and taking a pic asap..is self evident. Thanks!
