Geoff BeetlesParticipant
Sort of the reverse of this is Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost. She wrote a lovely book about walking too, Wanderlust. Worth a look.
Geoff BeetlesParticipantAnd I was happy to see a view from one of James Turrell’s Skyspaces as the Cloud of the Day on 12th Sept. Thanks Sarah and Gavin too!
Geoff BeetlesParticipantI visited another of James Turrell’s SkySpaces yesterday at Houghton Hall, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk UK.
Again, very impressive. While I was there the sky was overcast Stratocumulus and not the most spectacular, but the very selective view from SkySpace helps you appreciate the subtleties and changes within a small area of sky. By removing the perspective it brings the sky down very close.
Visiting is highly recommended, especially this summer while there is an exhibition of Richard Long’s work too.
I’ve discovered a 4th UK Turrell SkySpace at Keilder Forest. On my list for long weekends away.
Geoff BeetlesParticipantIt’s true that land art doesn’t necessarily feature clouds. Dr James Fox’s feature on Turrell’s SkySpace at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park shows how this work is certainly conceived as a way of experiencing the sky. On Youtube it starts at 5min26sec in on Part 4 of Forest, Field and Sky – art out of nature. All 4 parts are worth a look.
Sorry, but I have no idea how to insert a live link. Much better to visit the real thing at Tremenheere or Wakefield anyway.
Geoff BeetlesParticipantThanks – I can now plot my tactics!
Geoff BeetlesParticipantJust a question about the Three’s a Cloud and Ever Vigilant badges on the cloud spotting app.
Do the three or seven qualifying spots have to be for clouds/effects not previously spotted? Or can they be new photos within the time period of clouds already in your collection?(I feel faintly daft for worrying about such things at age 65, but I don’t much care… In fact I don’t care at all.)
Geoff BeetlesParticipanthygge:
Have you tried clicking on the menu bars at top right to log in? It seems to take you in to different places eg if you click from the forum page it gives access to photo adding etc and if you click from the home page it gives you account info. But once you’ve logged in once you have access to all areas. I think. And they also give you a log out option. I very rarely logged in to the old site and only then for the shop, not the forum, so I’m not sure how it used to work. I imagine these are issues that Gavin is working on.Gavin/moderators – these comments on the new site seem to be getting a bit dispersed between the news section and here. Maybe a “new site comments and responses/update” thread on the forum might be a way to pull things together in one place? Maybe changing this thread title (with Martha’s approval) and making it a sticky would be the way?
(Just trying the edit function)
Geoff BeetlesParticipantYes it’s a bit of a rummage, but go to the foot of the page, the grey box and look at “Upgrades for existing members”. All is clear there. You keep your existing membership number etc, but get the new add ons, Cloud of the Day, shop discount etc. You don’t have to pay the one off £10 set up fee for new members. Hope that’s clearer.
