Four wildfires are currently raging in the mountains of Colorado. We had plans to escape the city and covid-induced cabin fever by heading to the hills this weekend; canceled our Aspen itinerary because Interstate 70, the main thoroughfare east/west across the state, has been closed due the Grizzly Creek Fire for days. We opted for Steamboat Springs instead, to the northeast. From Steamboat Lake we had a direct vantage point for the Cameron Peak Fire–which had only recently started burning. And on our path back to Denver we had to skirt the even newer Williams Fork Fire. I’ve never been so close to a big fire before; have to say it was terrible and wondrous. Just learned today what a pyrocumulus/flammagenitus is.

It’s awful to think about the destruction of wildlife and peoples’ homes and property.
