ParticipantSome great work by all in Vol 13. 100 photos of fun. So here’s another 100 starting with a bit of nastiness that went up the highway I-17 here in Phoenix in July’22.

If I recall one system from the southwest and one from the northwest converged over the Phoenix area. But the mystery, like Keelins sky.. it feels organic, it could be alive

-
May 2, 2023 at 5:37 am #571929
Michael Lerch
ParticipantThanks Bill. The north hills of the Valley ,that is Phoenix, greet the monsoon season by displaying shows of towering congestus some succeed all the way to nimbus. But along the way a lot ,or a few, pileus are created . The contrast of such a delicate expression by raw unleashed power fascinates. It takes days of 110f to pull up the moisture from the subtropics and if you’re really lucky a dust storm, haboo, accomplices the show. I don’t think humans were meant to go out in this weather that creates pileus but I use a zoom telephoto lens when I do which reaches out pretty far at the 300mm end.

ParticipantWell here we are Ruth last day of July and all we got,is one day of monsoon build up and back flow into the Valley..One day of about half an hour of rain in total. I shot more Pileus in March than I have all of July. A week ago, today and tomorrow were projected to be rainy days. Now sunny tomorrow and the following week with ever increasing to the 110f + dayz. The good news is today it did not hit 110f…Point is..the summer’s monsoon was projected to be weaker than norm. But we had a pineapple monsoon ( the weather came directly from Hawaii) this last winter , filling the local reservoirs with another year or two of time to figure out how to stretch that to 4 to 5 years…Like your Big Sky shot of the undulatus signaling active winds at various heights.May August see a return of the high pressure center to the rightful owners ,4 Corners , restoring a monsoon season to at least a Thank You for showing up. Some fun with crepuscular follows.

ParticipantPrevious record for a string of 110f + days in a row, consecutively , in Phoenix ,was 18..I think we just ended the streak of 31 days in row of reaching 110f + ..all of July..it hit 110f or More..for everyday in the month of July..in Phoenix..There is only 2 places one can be when you step out side..in a pool or in something that has A/C..The Citrus tree leaves got burnt. The mulberry trees got burnt.Don’t forget the bombardment of Xrays and CME’s coming from our one and only Sun as it ramps up it current building solar cycle (24?)..Its definitely long sleeve season if you are out side for long periods of time. Its so hot out there the local pawn shop won’t take it…oh well..
The winds curl the clouds and create velum. Nice capture.

ParticipantThanks Ruth!..Would you believe yesterday was the first day of pileus formation as a result of the “monsoon” season?..and even at that it was a poor show due to winds ripping the delicate pileus loosing their smoothness. Today the winds brought the moisture from the suntropics but it all kept rite on going.Nothing hung around to even precipitate..
Thanks Bill..For me,Clouds always brings the “water color” perspective..photographed in a way to lend themselves to be seen as a watercolor illustration. I mean, they are made of water and light plays well within them. I suppose thats the fun I refer to when I capture clouds.
