Patricia L KeelinParticipantThank you, Michael, for a perfect Pileus to launch Vol XVIII!
And Ruth, always happy to see those blues.
Yesterday morning’s surprise was FOG! A rare visitor here. I took an early walk eager to see what was barely there to be seen.

November 3, 2025 at 4:27 am #666848
Michael LerchParticipantAs I recall , some wind Ruth. It stayed west in its path to the north. Saw your beam in the Gallery and now this…with snow. You had some fun!

Ruth QuistParticipantAnother nice one Michael #184. The sky is treating you well.
May be a Velum?

-
November 6, 2025 at 3:17 am #667289
Michael LerchParticipantNeat shot Ruth.! Probably some left over cumulus or stratus rather than velum..Velum is usually smooth, sheet like. Velum is made by a cloud so it usually is close to the surface of a cloud

Very nice hat cloud, Michael!
Here are some clouds from this morning over the Netherlands. My guess would be cirrus fibratus but I’m not sure.
-
November 10, 2025 at 3:14 am #667672
Michael LerchParticipantThank you Alvar. There is undulatus in there with the fibratus indicating winds going in all different directions high up. System coming in!

Hans StockerParticipantWow, Michael. You produce an enormous amount of marvelous calor images in this thread. I love them and others also btw. You #1958 is fantastic and shows something strange at the bottom. Your last one must be from the same series. It is a very intriguing one, this layer with the cloud heads above (which I think is castellanus).

Cirrus Weaving
-
April 12, 2026 at 4:56 am #686575
Michael LerchParticipantNice composition Hans! The eye floats through it. Thanks for your comments. #131 and #132 over in Sunsets also from same session as is below. As the sun was setting,I’m facing east, shots are of segments of stratus getting pushed around by Australian Sheepdog Winds, relentless herding. You see Castellanus, im seeing the top of the stratus being pulled up by Asperitus winds..the dark arcs under the castellanus suggest mild Asperitas…clouds going up..Im wondering if there should be names for all the elements of Asperitas as there is for a..Tornado..?
