George PreoteasaParticipantCould these be asperatus? Spotted in Marquette, Michigan (Upper Penninsula, on Lake Superior).

ParticipantHi, George, and welcome. It is certainly worth asking the question as you have the undulation. In the link below contorted and turbulent are mentioned:
P.S. The name changed to ‘Asperitas’ around 7/15.

Gavin Pretor-PinneyKeymasterGeorge, Thanks for posting the image. Sorry it has taken a while to respond. I think that you could say that is an example of asperitas (as it is know being officially called – the World Meteorological Organisations are proposing this rather than the original asperatus as the official name). It is not a classic example – for that, you’d want the undulations to be a bit more turbulent – but it can pass as an asperitas. Well spotted.

Michael LerchParticipantGeorge..When in doubt, I generally look at the photo or even real life,,upside down. The pockets, waves, holes, undulations etc, that consist of the ” mixed up”, “agitated” “aerated” “stirred” connotations of Asperitus , become easily seen for some reason ( a flat surface from which all diverse, maybe?) when viewed upside down. Actually the upside down view is a good habit for viewing all clouds and Illustration Art as Well..imho.

ParticipantWell!. You are right, of course, MikeL; how could I have had a moment’s doubt.
I think I got a similar effect by pushing the top of my laptop screen away – George passes the asperitas test that way.
