Timelapse Frontignano, Belvedere

Massimiliano Squadroni, continues his project “The Sunrise from Alps to Apennines” and this timelapse was filmed over Frontignano, Belvedere at 1650m on 3 November this year (Apennines, Monti Sibillini, Italy).  He told us he would also like to start an appeal to save the glaciers.

Michael Menger, Member 16,382 was able to observe clouds at their own height 500 m above the Atlantic on the southwest coast of Madeira.  He told us “it was a stunning spectacle at sunset which left me with mouth agape”.

Asperitas over Ontario, Canada

Eileen Hennemann, Member 27,616 was extraordinarily  lucky to have her camera ready to video these Asperitas clouds over Ontario, Canada on 6th October 2024.  She says “We dashed outside to see a narrow swatch of storm clouds that had creeped up from the US midwest and actually accelerated through our area.”

“The Human Weather”

Society founder, Gavin Pretor-Pinney took part in a documentary, “The Human Weather”, that went out earlier this year. It was produced by Choi, Pyeongsoon, Program Director of Documentary at Korea Educational Broadcasting System. 

Cloud Timelapse over Burnie, Tasmania

Gary McArthur, Member 5,353, sent us this timelapse of mesmerising patterns produced by an upper altocumulus floccus layer projecting shadows onto a lower layer of Altocumulus stratiformis .  It was captured from his home in Tasmania, Australia in February of this year.

The Yukon Aurora

In September of last year, George Preoteasa, Member 41,445, travelled to Whitehorse, Yukon.  Although the  aurora was the main attraction, he found that the Yukon is stunning.

He told us:  “as you know, I take timelapse pictures and turn them into movies, so of course I have one from this trip. The aurora was let’s say, subdued, not as powerful as when we were in Yellowknife, but I managed to get some reasonably good clips, I think. What I really like about them is how the clouds roll in and cross over”.

Shadows in the Sky

Jurene Phaneuf, Member 45,173 , sent us the link to Mike Olbinski’s video “Shadows in the Sky”.  The images are mesmerising and the accompanying music very atmospheric.

Annular eclipse ‘23 at Mexican Hat, Utah

George Preoteasa, Member 41,445, sent in his timelapse video of the recent annular eclipse.  He told us, “I was in Mexican Hat, Utah, which was on the centerline. It’s hard to capture the feeling in a movie or pictures, given that you have to use a solar filter most of the time, so you have to make a composite. But I tried”.

A Night Under the Northern Lights

George Preoteasa, Member 41,445, joined us on our 2022 Sky Holiday to Canada to see the Northern Lights. On his last night he set up a camera by the lake taking time-lapse pictures for 6 hours from 10pm. The film is about 4 minutes long and ends with clouds rolling in, while the aurora green is still the dominant light.

Ocean Cloud Scape

Rebecca Hosking, an Australian photographer, has shared a second timelapse video of the ocean cloud scape along the Great Ocean Road, Fairhaven, in Victoria, Australia.

The Sunrise from Alps to Apennines – November 2022

Massimiliano Squadroni has sent the latest time-lapse video.  He told us “it’s a journey above the clouds that begins at the snow-covered Gavia Pass, rises to the peaks of Monte Rosa, bivouac in front of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo illuminated by the first light of day, flies over the Auronzo valley and the Sella Pass, the clouds are colored like in an aurora, the Apennines, the mists of Pian Grande hide what remains of the town of Castelluccio”.

Cinema & Clouds

Sandro Lecca (Member 58,283), who is based in Sardinia, Italy, has put together a compilation of classic cloud-themed scenes from the world of cinema. Including clips from directors like Arnold Fanck in the 1920s, Sergei Eisenstein in the 1930s, Roberto Rossellini in the 1950s right up to those of the modern day, ‘Cinema e Nuvole’ is Sandro’s homage to the sky in movies. You’ll find the sources of the clips he featured listed at the end.

Sunrise and Moon

Massimilano Squadroni sent us his latest timelapse “Sunrise and Moon”.  It was filmed on 13th July 2022 at Osservatorio Capanna Regina Margherita, a mountain hut belonging to the Italian Alpine Club located on the summit of Punta Gnifetti of Monte Rose near the border between Italy and Switzerland.  He told us “The moon sets in the sea of clouds, the climbers leave the hut, bright spots along the way back, the sunrise from Punta Gnifetti is a unique emotion”

Supercell over Vercelli, Italy

Massimiliano Squadroni, shared this timelapse of the formation of a supercell on Saturday 28 May, which affected the Vercelli area in north Italy with violent rain, hail and gusts of wind.
