Contrails. What are contrails. We didn’t have them in the 50s, 60s, 70s. What’s new?

The first contrails were observed in world war I in 1915. A plane must be sufficiently high to make the water particles from the airplane engines form ice crystals that make up the contrails. Nowadays the planes are at 10 km high where the conditions are often favorable for the formation of contrails. A little googling will learn you a lot about the subject or check the Cloudpotter’s Guide by Gavin about the subject. That is fun to read.
