These clouds were spotted by a friend of mine whilst walking around Cheddar reservoir, I saw the same from Westbury sub Mendip.  Unfortunately only an iPhone pic.IMG_5482

Indeed they are my friend! Wonderful example as well. Technical name is Stratocumulus Fluctus I think. Nice shot!

I understand you suspect it to be KH, but I have doubts Julia. Best case it has been KH where the crests don’t show anymore. In any case you spotted a situation in the sky where you might find KH. Anyway a nice sunset.

I couldn’t pull over fast enough. Everything was changing so rapidly.  I took the long way home to avoid traffic and was rewarded with an amazing sunset display!  Pulled over twice!

Looking like a group in a boat.  Hoping I caught a Fluctus.  Please,P1070400 (2) any expert assistance in this cloud formation.

Ruth, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I do not think those happen to be fluctus only because of the fact that the wave-like structures are not all going the same way. I believe they are just altocumulus cloudlets.

Gregory, I see now that the waves need to go the same direction.  Thanks so much.  I will take some cloudlets though in my boat.

Yes Philip. That’s a nice example of KH imo.

Helmholtz would have taken the shifted “t” (helmholzt) as a proof of the 2nd law of thermodynamics’ entropy 😛
