Lacunosus and/or Floccus clouds?

    I am just now getting around to learning to use my Cloud Selector wheel and I am wondering if these clouds with a few holes in them are Lacunosus clouds?  Hans, I saw one of your photos of the Lacunosus clouds online – August 2016, I believe.

    And this is the one I was wondering if it was Floccus clouds?  I am just learning to move past, “Hey, those are really cool clouds” to actually knowing the names of the clouds, so I appreciate any help.  I made this image black and white for the contrast.

    Hello Ramona,

    Goord to see you back on the forum!

    Nice iridescence in the first picture. To me it seems to be cumulus that shows the iridescence in the fringes. Unfortunately there is no variety lacunosus for cumulus. So no lacunosus I think.

    I use the links in the top of the forum to the ICA to check when in doubt. When you see the table for the summary of cloud classification you will find out in what kind of cloud (genus) lacunosus is possible and it will also show you an example. You can find more examples in the gallery of course for the genera that shows this variety.

    The second one might indeed be floccus for cirrocumulus, but I am not sure.

      Thanks for the welcome back, Hans!  We had a death in the family, so I have been out of touch with things for a while, but it is good to be back.  I appreciate the heads up on the links – the identification wheel is great, but just a starting place for identification!  I will check the links out!

    I agree with Hans, no lacunosus, but nice iridescence. And either cirrocumulus or altocumulus flocus.

    Interestingly, I noticed that you can see something that looks like lacunosus clouds in … beer. Pour a beer with a nice head. When the head dissipates, there may be a little foam with holes in it. Sometimes, it may look like undulatus.  Maybe we should start a “clouds in beer” thread.  (Just kidding.)

      Ha, this phenemonon in beer needs very thorough investigation George. A serious lacunosus in a glass of beer must be fought!

      Well, hey – if different things can be “seen” in the clouds, then I don’t see why clouds could not be “seen” in other things, too!  And beer is a great example, LOL
