Paul Simons, Weather Eye in The Times (UK) today, talks of the concern for the inferno setting off fire tornados. In 1871 in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, USA, the fire hurled trains and buildings into the air. ‘…rain from pyrocumulus clouds can sometimes help to put fires out.’

Richard Hamblyn, The Cloud Book, says ‘The air needs to be fairly still for viable pyrocumulus clouds to form, otherwise the thermal currents cooked up by the fire will be dispersed before the rising water vapour can reach the condensation point necessary for the formation of clouds.’
