‘At first light, the clouds move gently.
Not hurried, not still.
Like the breath of history unfolding overhead.
Beneath them, the marble and granite stand firm.
The clouds have seen the slow footfalls of soldiers,
and the hurried steps of schoolchildren,
the arc of fireworks, the hush of candles.
They have seen wars begin and end,
have floated over speeches and marches,
over oaths spoken beneath pale winter skies.
And still, they drift.
Bearing witness in their silent, passing way,
to the promise that rises with the dawn.’
‘The Clouds Bear Witness’, a poem by Peter J White (Member 56,037).
Altocumulus floccus, appearing as the slightly darker clouds, with patches of Stratocumulus below, looking slightly brighter as they are lit by the city lights, spotted over the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, US by Peter J White (Member 56,037).
