Michael Luscombe (Member 54,917) spotted the aurora borealis from Falmouth, Cornwall, down in the south of England. When sending in his spotting, Michael referred to the aurora as the ‘mirrie dancers’. This name comes from the opposite end of the British Isles: in Orkney and Shetland, the island archipelagos off the north coast of Scotland. The local Scots term mirr means to ‘shimmer’ or ‘quiver’. On January 19, when Michael spotted this aurora, a powerful G4-class geomagnetic storm had led the Northern dancers to shimmy all the way down to him on the country’s far south coast.
