Susanna Gilbert (Member 48,913) spent a few days of contemplation with the monks at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. This isolated retreat, on the outskirts of Abiquiú, New Mexico, US, is surrounded by miles of open wilderness and big, big skies. This is a still place. There is little else to do but look, listen, and absorb. Here, a person has the time and silence to appreciate the ethereal cloudscapes above and the rocky landscapes below. Susanna was taken by the cloud formation she spotted over the Chama River. It’s like a celestial wave breaking against the butte, a spray of Cirrus spissatus radiatus reaching into the heavens. Ever since 1941, when the phrase was first placed on the state’s license plates, New Mexico has been known as the ‘Land of Enchantment’.
