‘I witnessed this cloud at dawn while travelling near Nainital, in Uttarakhand, India,’ said Amanda Gale (Member 66,166). It was producing optical effects known as crepuscular rays. These formed when the rising Sun shone onto a Cumulus fractus cloud, illuminating its edges and creating shafts of light and shadow that were rendered visible as the light was scattered by the haze of the morning mist. ‘I was graced by the scene,’ said Amanda, ‘while stretching during a break in our bus journey – tired from an uncomfortable night-long trip.’
