The sky does not discriminate between city dwellers and country folk. As Claude Crommelin (Member 64,892) puts it, ‘You do not have to be in the great outdoors to see fantastic skies like this one.’

Claude spotted this view of optical effects complementing the skyline over London, England. The optical effects include a parhelion (commonly called a sun dog) and an upper tangent arc. Both were produced by the sunlight shining through ice crystals up in the Cirrus and Cirrostratus clouds that were in the shape of hexagonal plates. The parhelion is the bright vertical spot to the right of the Sun, just touched by the tip of a crane. The upper tangent arc is the smile-shaped curve directly above the Sun. The high clouds providing these ice crystals for this display of aerial city lights likely appeared ahead of an arriving weather front.
