Mount Fuji Clouds

Andrew Pothecary, Member 3,769 recently got in touch to tell us about an article on The Asahi Shimbun website.

The article focuses on a study by Hiroyuki Kusaka, who, driven by curiosity, embarked on a survey along with a team of scientists, of the iconic lenticularis or “cap clouds” over Mount Fuji.  The aim of the survey was to discover the types of clouds most likely to form under the conditions around Mount Fuji.  The article quotes “Our scientific data showed that the knowledge of people in the past based on their personal experiences was quite accurate,” Kusaka said. “Some formerly unknown conditions were revealed at this time as well too.”  The outcome of the research has been published in the Royal Meteorological Society’s journey Weather.
