While hiking up Hurricane Hill in Olympic National Park, Washington, US, Laura Hamilton (Member 55,495) found herself sandwiched between layers. The clouds above were Altocumulus stratiformis, a form of the mid-level clumpy cloud, Altocumulus, that takes its name from the Latin for ‘extended looking’. Whenever you see a cloud spread like a quilt across the entire sky, you’re likely looking at the stratiformis form of one of the main cloud types. Below Laura was some valley fog. This can form when droplets condense in cold air that sinks down the slopes and settles in a valley. Laura would soon meet this cloud up close. ‘It was a magical walk,’ she told us. ‘I started it looking up at the clouds, peaked the hill looking down at the clouds, and walked back within the clouds.’
