While flying over Lake Michigan, US, Maria Popova (Member 38,823) surveyed what she described as ‘the dazzling dimensionality of Earth’. These are Cumulus radiatus, sometimes referred to as cloud streets. The Cumulus form on columns of air rising off the sun-warmed ground and can be teased out in the direction of the wind like this when they’re held beneath a warmer layer of air above. Had Maria been on the shores of Lake Michigan below, her parallel rows of Cumulus would have appeared to radiate from the horizon due to the effect of perspective. From up in the high sky above, she could enjoy a different kind of perspective.
