For a view of this rare cloud over central London – including the famous London Eye – take a look at this photo which comes from NASA’s APOD page:-

Right, I do have a similar one taken on the same moment. And no, I didn’t send it in….

Hi Nienke, this was Tuesday April 8th just before sunset, there was hail that day and beautiful clear skies inbetween.

It would be great to see your same pic :) Did you send it in?

  1. Beautiful! I have not seen any of these myself, yet.

  2. Nienke Lantman avatar Nienke Lantman says:

    Interesting, thank you Laurence!

  3. Laurence Green avatar Laurence Green says:

Lovely shot. You have captured something rather rare indeed. The Noctilucent cloud is usually some 80kms above the Earth and touching space itself.

Here is some brief but useful info about this rare cloud taken from NASA’s “Astronomy Picture Of the Day” (APOD) website:-

Hope this is of use to others here.

Hoi Nienke.

(dutch for when this picture was taken)

Schitterend! Ik heb ze nog nooit gezien, hoe laat is dit ongeveer?

    Thanks :)

Actually the sun already had set, this is a reflection of the sun, some sort of sundog. It lingered on for quite some time, maybe half an hour.

  2. Anthony Skellern says:

Sumptuous colour and wonderful texture in that sky – thanks A.J.

  3. Beate Blecher avatar Beate Blecher says:

    Beautiful sky – lovely lighting!

I wrote about the fun I always have watching clouds and that recently I sent many pics but they haven't been put in the gallery. The reason might be that I see more things in clouds than other people, as I am a 'trained' cloudspotter : )

  5. Alex Cliff avatar Alex says:

I second whatever Nienke said lol :) Good pic. Well caught.

Once, I saw clouds like this in New York State, USA. Alas, I did not have my camera with me. I thought they looked like herringbone. Nice pic.
