Akseli Gallen-Kallela was a Finnish painter working around the turn of the twentieth century, whose style varied greatly over his career, ranging from fantastical illustrations for the Finnish national epic poem the ‘Kalevala’, to impressionistic landscape oils like this one. Here, he showcases towering Cumulus – known officially as Cumulus congestus – over what was likely Lake Keitele in central Finland. This is a region that has one of the highest concentrations of lakes in the world. These can reflect, like mirrors, the ever-changing moods of the sky.
Pilvitornit, or_ Cloud Towers_ (1904), by Akseli Gallen-Kallela is in the collection of the Didrichsen Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland.
