Rick Sorensen (Member 1,434) noticed a golden sunrise light over the neighbourhood of Devils Lake, Oregon, US. The sky had been a dull grey, but the morning rays soon lit up the clouds, and bright yellow eyelashes appeared to brush across the rooftops.
These eyelashes are the cloud features known as virga. Their feathery streaks are rain, snow, or ice crystals falling from a cloud – in this case, an Altocumulus – that dissipate away in drier, warmer air below before ever reaching the surface. Such golden mascara and eyeshadow will fade as the sky’s eye opens wide to face the brightening day.
