July 10, 2017 at 8:36 pm in reply to: Night Shining Clouds – Noctilucent Clouds – 2 July 17 – Weather Watchers #220356Laurence GreenParticipant
Hello “Noctilucy”
Were it be your wish would be my command. But I am no god, just a mere mortal so, alas, I cannot contrive in some way to bring Noctilucent clouds your way. Oh, dear!
I live in Yate, south Gloucestershire (11 miles north east of City of Bristol). Lights pollute the skies here pretty bad – and that is putting it midlly. There is scant chance of my seeing clouds of the type you fancy. A pity…
By the way, picking up on your posting elsewhere on this Forum – “Hope” – I am glad to know you are back in the CAS fold. Welcome back!

Laurence GreenParticipantAt my suggestion just a short while ago to the BBC Weather Watchers suggesting possibly featuring an article about the enticing lovely scent of rain falling after a long dry spell, the BBC W/W’s, I am pleased to say, have featured an article – here it is:-

Enjoy.

Laurence GreenParticipantThanks for this information, Hygge.
The Lake District should have been awarded World Heritage Site status ages ago! Yes, it is classed as a “National Park” but World Heritage status adds a lot more gravity importance to a really wonderful part of the UK and indeed, the World.

I feel I must offer to you an apology if the use of my term, “Bolt Lightning” caused unintended confusion. I really should have used the more correct term, Thunderbolt. A search on GOOGLE Images using the word Thunderbolt will throw up scores of photos.
Again, my apologies.

Laurence GreenParticipantThanks Hans and Hygge
I am ok that the term I used, “Bolt Lightning” is not graphically or meteorologically correct but that is the way I described it.
You must have heard of the well used phrase, “A bolt from the blue”?
A quick Google search on the Images page using “Bolt Lightning” as a quick search will show more bolts.

Laurence GreenParticipantHello Keelin
Thank you very much for your welcome reply.
Your reply made my “grey cells” do a wee bit of overtime as regards lovely images of Cirrus clouds and then this one came to mind.
The photo, contained in the link below, comes from member, Rosie Green, who took this lovely shot over The Dingles, west county Kerry, Ireland. It featured, pleased to say, in the CAS calendar in 2015 or maybe 2016. It is a lovely shot. Maiden’s Hair par excellence!

Laurence GreenParticipantThank you kindly, Hans. Your posting of the photo is much appreciated by me.
Maidens Hair – I may be quite wrong about this but I have read ages ago that the hair of a lady is something like 10,000 times finer than that of a man – that is the intrinsic allure of a woman’s hair to the eyes of a man. There is the saying, “A woman’s hair is her crowning glory”. I certainly go along with that.
Likewise, the sensitivity of a woman’s hand is so much finer compared to a man. I know car manufacturer Honda or some other Japanese concern, specially employed ladies to run their hands over newly painted cars ready for export and if they found the slightest blip, blemish, bubble, blister, pimple etc the car would be sent back the paint shop for complete strip down and repaint and further re-examination.
Best wishes.
Laurence
Laurence GreenParticipantLike you, George, I thought this footage might be a clever fake.
I have viewed this video several times and still left wondering.
How was the video footage filmed from above in the right position and capturing the scene so well with the aircraft in relatively close proximity to the photographer and posing a possible air collision? It somehow looks a bit staged managed. Maybe a drone was used?
Intriguing!
Laurence
Laurence GreenParticipantMy pleasure, Keelin. Glad you liked the posting.
As an aside, I am a lover of classical music along with other types of music – my musical tastes are quite broad.
Thus said, in my funny ways, I often liken clouds to musical instruments.
Examples – my biggest favourite cloud is the majesterial, mighty and powerful Cumulonimbus (the “Anvil” or “Cauliflower” shaped cloud) – I liken this to the mighty organ, the King of all instruments given its sheer power and at the same time oh so quiet delicacy. Likewise, I am, by way of contrast, fascinated and enchanted by the fine Cirrus clouds, especially those resembling the finest of Maidens Hair, which I liken to the harp.
I am now retired but in my many jobs beforehand was for quite some while a ladies hairdresser. One lady in particular I specially liked to attend to was one who had truly beautiful fine, fine hair – a real pleasure to comb and do it really proud. She always made a “bee-line” to me to get her fine hair given special TLC. Her hair colour was beautiful natural deep ginger / conker brown. Luscious colour, luxuriant and in abundance of growth!

I think the image contained in the link below and taken down from NASA’s APOD page will be of interest to you, yes?
The photo was taken in January 2013 in Australia at the Gippsland Lakes area, Victoria.

It is a remarkable phenomenon.

Laurence GreenParticipantHi there, Keelin
Greetings to you.
Re:- Petrichor – here we are!
Well, after a very long dry, hot and record breaking temperatures for many parts of the UK the first rain is coming (Friday 23rd June).
I picked up on the scent of rain to come yesterday late evening and thought to myself, “Laurence, rain is on the way”. The scent was really keen and delicious to the senses.
The rain is now just about to make a welcome, if not shy, appearance, and guess what, the scent / smell of Petrichor! The scent is really strong and enticing.
Laurence
Laurence GreenParticipantWell, I am now eating very humble pie, so to speak!
“Flaming June” is certainly well upon us. Hahh! The way the British weather changes is remarkable.

Thanks very much for this posting – it is both appreciated and fascinating.
The scene shows the famous and photogenic “Three Rocks” situated in south Wales between the Gower peninsular and beautiful Rhossili – one of my real favourite places I dearly love to visit in any season.
